Wet sand 800-1200grit then clear with a good quality clear eg. Upol #1. Will give a better longer lasting finish than most resto kits.

Do you know how well the clear coat holds up long term?
Will it last for years and years?
What happens if it yellows again, do you just repeat the process?

I have a spare set of headlights here that I was thinking of blackening (STi style) and then polishing and treating the lenses.

The headlight restoration kits seem ok short term but I would like something that lasted long term.

If using a good quality UV resistant plastic-adhering clear then it should be years. I've heard of people claiming it's lasted 4-5 years for them. You could use more readily available clears but would need clear plastic adhesion promoter. I tried using regular septone clear the first time I tried it and it didn't want to stick flat to the lens.

Here is the technique in action:

Thanks Brennners, it actually looks quite good in the video.
I will add it to my long list of jobs to do. Haha

Yep like 99sti said i ended up buying a new STI one from impex, should be here Monday or Tuesday. Mine were stuffed on the inside from me cleaning them after i resealed them a couple of years ago. They gradually got worse and i ruined the passengers totally trying to fix it for rego. Also i found a halogen drivers side complete headlight with a really good lense for $80 locally which plugs straight in and works if anyone is wondering. I'm just going to swap it's lense onto my existing HID light.

I use UV resistant poly-urethane used for sealing outdoor timber, mixed 50/50 with mineral turps.
This is applied with microfiber cloth.

This is a very inexpensive solution, and in my opinion results in a much better finish than the "kits" you can buy at supercheap.

As other people have said, you can renew most headlights back to new using 1000-3000 grit sandpaper, finishing with a polishing compound.

The trick is that once you have refinished the surface, you have essentially removed the factory UV coating.
Resealing the plastic with a UV resistant finish is what is required to keep the plastic from going cloudy again.
