I'm trying to motivate myself to get my RX7 on the track sometime this decade. I've had this thing sitting basically like it is now for about 7 years. No money in the budget for it. So though Id' chuck a thread up and maybe get keen!!

I really want to get it going though, and get some use out of it. So, it's decided it will be a very low budget racer.

At the moment it's a mostly empty shell. It has an engine/gearbox. Rear end, fuel tank still in. Sitting on really old warn out Ohlins struts with RSR springs.

To get to the track really only requires:

ECU
Coilovers
Rims/Tyres
Seat
Wiring
Lot's of little fiddly things
And preferably a cage.

All big ticket items of course! :( Can work on it from there though...

I'll be pulling the engine soon, to give the engine bay a really good clean and probably some paint. Maybe white or grey.

Yep. One of those was on a trailer that passed me on my way home from WP yesterday afternoon.....it was a whole car though. It had been at Marulan.

EDIT: Less (not zero) $ spent on shiny for the Forester, more on this one.

These things had cool engine-gearbox combos, from what I remember: 13B intercooled turbo, right ... with a 5-speed? Lots of fun to be had, right there!

Indeed. That is the plan. There's a list of things for the Forester, and that'll be that!

Yep, exactly that. Very light too. My estimate is 1100kg tops (hopefully a bit less) with me in it, running and ready to head out for some laps.

I frequently dream of either an N/A 20B (triple rotor) with big ports, or an LS1 or 3... Neither swap is that difficult and neither fits in the budget racer mission statement either!!! Hahaha... Scrap that!

Made a little progress today. Over the last few weeks, I've been thinking less about mods for the Foz and more about the RX7.

I have a dodgy gearbox mount so that's been taken to the local rotary specialist and they're going to try to machine up some bushes to replace a particular item that wears and breaks often. The bush is not available separately from Mazda.

That meant the Gearbox was not secured to the car... I called up AGI in Sydney about getting a simple bolt in half cage made up but they don't have a jig for the FC so might be taking the car up for that in the next month or so... So the gearbox had to come out... May as well take the engine too, because it really needs a clean, and the engine bay could use a bit of a freshen up too.

Looking at getting an Adaptronic ECU for it soon and will create an all new body harness for the few things a track car needs that aren't the ECU. Basically, brake lights and power for fuel pump. Then power to the ECU, grounds, starter, battery cut off. Hmmm, that's about it! Might go JDM time attack style and put on some strobes and super bright driving lights and stuff. :)

Getting a little bit motivated, but going to be strict with a low budget.

Apologies for crappy phone pic.

Such a little engine! Also, had to find an appropriate tyre to sit the motor on of course!

At this stage it looks like the car is off to AGI Precision to get a CAMS spec bolt in cage late next month.

In the mean time, I'm slowly wire wheeling off the remaining little bits of sound deadener residue etc from inside the car and getting rid of seam sealer where I can easily get to it. Not going to be stitch welding or anything like that yet... Probably not a big deal when I expect the car to have about 160-180rwkw at most!!

I'm going to paint the engine bay and interior in a battleship grey colour just to make it easy to see in there etc.

ECU is decided - An Adaptronic e420d. Aussie designed and made, like the best ECU's in the world!

The car should be back with the cage sometime early August, so at that point all the wiring will begin. Everything will be from scratch, brand new with the exception of some of the plugs for various items that will be chopped off the existing harness - like injector plugs, CAS plug etc.

Fun times!!

Slowly chipping away at the sound deadener. The vast majority was done with dry ice, I'm working on the residue that was left and the firewall area. Also getting as much seam sealer out as possible. Will stitch weld the chassis sometime in the future.

Very tedious job! Should be nice and clean when it's all done though.

I also removed the fuel tank and got rid of about 15 litres of 8 year old fuel. The smell is disgusting and it looks pretty terrible too! Going to give the tank a good clean out and it'll go back in with all new rubber lines, and a Walbro 400. Being a rotor it's going to need a lot of fuel when stage 2 of the plan hits and we up the power!
