I have been having dramas with my VDC due to installing a 2015 sti steering rack, and have recently recieved my VAG KKL 409.1 cable and downloaded FreeSSM so I can reset the Steering Angle Sensor...

Ive connected the cable, have the correct com port set up but cannot connect to anything.

Reckon this is cause I have a Haltech ECU?

I thought it wouldnt matter sense Im trying to talk to the VDC unit but now i dont know

Im only guessing here... but VDC probs wont be happy without the OEM ECU? It will probably want to be constantly communicating with the ECU. It might want to know various infos such as throttle position or RPMs or similar for its calculations. And also be able to communicate back to the ECU when its performing VDC operations. And i dare say without the OEM ECU linked up with it, it probably will never be happy.

Best bet is to cut out a little square of black duct tape and stick it over the annoying orange light on your instrument cluster.

FreeSSM should be able to do the reset using the stock ECU.
Is the Haltech plug and play? You might be able to swap them out to do it without running the engine.
As Bram said it may need the stock ECU to function correctly.
AFAIK, Haltech has the the capability of controlling Vehicle Dynamics too, it is a matter of knowing how to set it up.

Carsubie - i was thinking about doing this. I have the standard ecu on my workbench. The reason i don't want to is ive just finished tidying up all the ecu wiring and ive got it stuck down good. haha

Bram - i think my solution lies here http://www.haltech.com/iq3-dash/

Hey man.

All you have to do is disconnect the steering angle sensor. VDC and hill start assist won't work but everything else will.

Also it appears only half of people who install the rack have problems
