Hey dudes..

Moving to Darwin within the next few weeks and will be driving up in my Lib..

Wondering if anyone has any tips on the drive, is 98 available regularly, any super bad roads that would require my car to be higher than the 90ish mm at lowest point at the moment..

Hoping Bob (be_oh_be) sees this and puts in his 2c!

Cheers guys.

Which way are you planning on going ?

The Bruce is getting repairs all over the joint, so if you chose this route, just be wary, if you travel at night, you'll avoid the delays from road works.

Google Maps says its 10 kms shorter if you head to Rocky, then head west.

When we drove up from Sydney to Mackay, we went inland and from what I recall, the roads are mainly single lane each way country roads, but dead straight and not too bad. Alot of trucks go inland, so you'd have to watch out for them.

Go up to just short of Rocky, head inland to Emerald and make sure you fill up there with all varieties of 98 available.

The next place with 98 is Winton (BP only), which is pretty much at the max you can do on 60L (unless you have a very economical car). You're better off with a 20L jerry so you can easily make it.

From Winton its only about 400 to Mt Isa, where Shell is the only 98 I've seen (two Shell servos).

From Mt Isa you've got to make it to Tennant Creek, which again is around 600 km and the only flavor of 98 there is BP.

Tennant Creek to Katherine is 670km (no 98 between them) and the only 98's you can get in Katherine are at the United or over at the BP depot which over the other side of the river from town. From there it is just a 300 km doddle up to Darwin.

Roads are typical Qld outback highways (= crap in parts, okay for most of it). NT roads aren't much different.

As an option to the Bruce Hwy you can head inland after Gympie and get onto the A3, which will have less towns and less traffic, up through Biloela (all varieties of 98 there) and do a left onto the A4 to get you to Emerald.

Good luck.

So.... After a 13 day adventure we are finally here!!! Being stranded in Mount Isa for 9 days was not my idea of fun. Although it could have been worse.. There were plenty of **** little towns on the way!

I sure did! Even if my car is only about 80-90mm from the ground :P The parents car got a roo bone in the fuel tank from running over a carcus, that's why we spent an extra 9 days in the Isa.

We didn't come across much rain at all, a little bit in Tennant creek on Weds night but that's it.

It's really surprising how awesome the roads are up here compared to QLD.

Wow, that would suck. I steer clear of all road kill just so I don't pick up smelly bits, let alone damage.

The roads, yeah they are pretty good in the NT compared to what you just drove on to get there coming from QLD.

Yeah same, although this occasion there was a road train coming the other way so had no choice.. Bloody bad lucky either way, it was a pretty good sized bone and broke right off, didn't realise until about 350km later when they went to fill up.. = released pressure from tank and it came gushing out haha :(

Sure are, 130km/h speed limit is also handy! Tennant to Darwin in about 8hrs!
