Hey guys, so I'm looking around for a clean low KM 04-05 Forester XT and not having a great deal of success. It then occurred to me, why not look into importing an STI Forester?

Am I completely out of my mind? Is this much easier said than done? I know NSW recently changed it's import laws, but to what effect I'm not totally across.

For example:
http://www.japan-partner.com/Auto/2323/ ... -sale.html

I don't know if that's a legitimate site or not (as I said, I've only just started looking into this). So I suppose my questions are:

1) Where should I even begin to look?
2) What are the import fee's and restrictions like?
3) Is this going to cost way more than I think?
4) Insurance, compliance, rego - is this going to be a costly pain in the ass?

I know there are a few 06+ Forester STI's in Australia (and members here own them), but I haven't actually seen the previous gen (04-05) which I am more fond of. For those who imported, what was your experience like, and did it end up costing you far more than it was worth?

The main appeal here is, of course, owning an STI Forester, but more so the availability of lower KM cleaner examples with single owners which really appeals to me.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! I was looking for something like this but came up short. My searching skills obviously aren't up to scratch.

What I've read is that the Forester STI should be eligible, no?

Hopefully the additional costs on top of the vehicle aren't too high.

I have no idea if the Forester is eligible, but it would be sweet!

Don't worry about your searching skills, I only knew about it because I read it at the start of the year. When I tried to search for it in Google I came up with nothing but I eventually tracked it down in the off topic section.

Have you got details or a link to these new NSW import laws.

They have only come in as Personal Imports in the past. ie owning it overseas for over 12 months etc etc

Apologies, I was actually getting this confused with the changes made to SEVS which was posted above. Seems that this won't be in place until 2018 so I may be out of luck.

So I emailed J-SPEC Imports and they promptly responded that these still cannot be imported, and by 2018 it's doubtful. Unless it's a personal import.

Back to hunting for XTs!

Talk to Iron Chef Imports in SA as they seem to be one of the few trustworthy importers. They know the current rules and they also campaigned for the 2018 changes. But I'm pretty sure the 2018 stuff has not be finalised.

Sounds like the exercise is going to be expensive both financially and time. I'm probably not in the position to be doing this, as much as I'd like to. I figured if the cost wasn't going to be too much more than what I can find locally, then sure.

Thanks anyway guys.
