Hi,

so, i'm having this stuttering issue at idle and at medium load (2500-3500 rpm about half throttle makes it jerk hard enough to feel in the throttle pedal as soon as it gets over 0.6bar of boost). While i hope that this is just a spark plug issue which wouldn't be surprising on a 16 year old car with 70k on the clock, there was one thing that came to my mind: Converting from the ugly coilpack atop of the manifold to a coil-on-plug setup.

I'm no fool, so off i went and found this thread: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showth ... ?t=1192028
Looks easy enough to do, get new coils, do some cutting and soldering here and there, done.

Now, the question is, as usual, whether it's worth it.
What will i gain from this?
Sure, i will lose the coilpack, which will be highly convenient when installing the bigass 04 WRX STi TMIC.
But will there be any other benefits?

Thanks.

I would think a CoP give a better spark than before. Probs wont mean much realistically. Maybe slightly better ignition event will give a better burn, so maybe miniscule increase in economy and performance. It might fix the issue your having, It might not. It might allow you to push slightly more boost before spark blow-out.

If you do do it, you can buy the Subaru CoP connectors that fit directly into the coils. That way you can make your wiring loom up without having to butcher a later model OEM harness, or having extra solder joins in the circuit.

I've done this on my old Legacy GT that had the EJ20G style single coil-packs and separate igniter, with excellent results.

Problem you may have is mounting holes for the Coilpacks on the rocker covers,

BUT
Is your engine an MY97-98 SPec with coilpack in the middle of the engine
or MY99-00 Spec with it mounted off centre

It's the one with the pack mounted off centre.

Cool,

I'm unsure if the EJ205 heads have mounting bolts to suit the COP's

Just went out and fingered around in the engine bay.

I think it does have the threaded holes in it, but no bolts in them.
Take a look at these pics, that's what i think my heads and covers look like:

Valve covers: http://s61.photobucket.com/user/VTEC_TH ... 9.jpg.html

The covers have that recess on the sides of the plug holes. And below those are the threaded holes in the heads.
Which is just perfect for fitting MY01+ CoPs. And it just so happens that someone on the german subaru forum is selling four CoPs that have seen just 33k for a nice price.

I'm going to try and snap a pic of the holes, just to make sure that they are actually threaded.
