Oddly enough, not. There were many many vehicles with that characteristic (and rocker panels & lower door skins) but mainly US domestic stuff, including pickup trucks.

In a trip blog thread somewhere - here or ORS - there was pic of an Outback outside the Birdsville pub with the back part all covered in a ghetto style home-made "canopy", ute style. Comments about it being a chop-job home-made ute. Today in Homer AK I saw a pristine Outback UTE drive past! Didn't know they existed, that BV one was probably NOT home-made.

Well now I've seen one in the flesh.

And talking of how many there are here, came out after lunch to find our rental flanked by FOUR Subaru's - two Foz and two Outbacks.
