You still got a job? How bad was it?

Not that bad. It didnt burn all the way to the ground

It wasnt really my fault. I fitted a new winch to a truck with an existing winch system. The old winch was a simple reverse polarity to reverse direction type setup, and used 4 solenoids to handle the off/forward/reverse switching. I reused the existing heavy gauge wiring. I disabled the reverse polarity solenoid pair by removing the trigger wires for the coils. But left the heavy guage wiring on the solenoids. And i re-used the 2 normal polarity solenoids to supply power to the new winch assembly. (The new winch had its own special solenoid to change direction.)

A solenoid from the existing system must have had a dud hold back spring or something loose in the contactor area??? Who knows, anyways it somehow closed circuit, even without any power to the coil to energise the solenoid. The closed circuit was basically a direct positive to negative of the new winch. It vapourised about 10m of heavy battery cable between front and rear of truck. Burnt a whole bunch of stuff like brake lines on the truck etc. And the current found its path to earth via the new winch, vaporizing its steel rope.

There were other factors, like i was never able to inspect the old winch and determine cause of failure. And the truck isolator switched lositive for the truck ONLY, and did not isolate the winch. And the winchs own isolator switchwd negative, leaving the entire circuit basically live upto the solenoid enclosure.

This exact same fault could have happened even if i had never been there, who knows, it may be the cause of the old winch failure even. I was just umlucky that it happened straight after i had worked on it. Both my managers said they would have done the retro fit exactly the same way as i had if they were doing the job. The workshop lead hand of the place i did the job at was very understanding. But apperently his management wants someone to persicute. It was a major road works / ashpalt / bitumen contractor, and safety is big in these types of companies. So no doubt there will still be more too come.

Big ones....

Ever seen a N94 or N200? Well this truck had 2 of them.

They are big bastards. About half a meter long. Probs equivelant to about 10 subaru batteries stacked end to end. You could weld with em you wanted. And thats basically what happened to the wiring in the truck.

So. Doing the repairs on the flaming truck today. (And probs all next week.) So much burn. I think whats made it even worse is all the compressed air lines for brakes and PTO and everything else on the truck went up as well. So when the line ruptures it just dumps high pressure air right on the fire. Turning a regular fire into a air accelerated fire. Kinda like adding nitrous... ferk.

thats interesting.... i would have thought the intense amount of air released would kind of 'blow it out'

ie candle to birthday cake senario

:dontknow: i didnt see it. All i can see is the sh1t storm it left behind.

I sort of imagined it like when your trying to light a fire and you have smouldering embers and you blow on them and the flare up and get bigger.
