OK, it's been a long journey, but i've finally tracked down the part number for this little beasty.

Item 22634 in the attached image.
The description is from the Subaru parts software
“SEN ASSY-INT AIR MY00-72F”
Buy price is about $60.00 trade

part# 22634KA071

This part is only useful for people running aftermarket (PowerFC especially) or V5/6 STi ECU's.
it allows the ECU to use the intake air temperature correction table to correct the fuelling requirements of the engine for changes in intake air temp.

EDIT:
OK, so the std WRX and GT looms do not support a direct plug-in of this sensor.
However it's easily attached to the ECU wiring loom. You'll need the special loom connectors which are available for bugger-all $$ from good electrical supply shops.

the signal wire at the ECU is plug B136 pin 19.
Blue plug, third row down, first pin on right looking into the back (Male side) of the connector.

The above image shows the ECU loom plugs viewed from the pin/ ECU (female) side of the connector. NOT the wiring loom (Male) side of the connector.

Also in regards to the GND wire of the sensor, i'm unsure as to whether it needs to be spliced into the "Sensor Ground" wire (Plug B136, Pin 24) or if it can just be earthed to the chassis. i'll have an experiment when i receive the part and install it

I had a fast response IAT sensor installed by me tuner but he has let me know there is NO IAT compensation in the PFC. Just water temp compensation. It is handy to see the IAT temps though so you can hold back a bit on the boost level if temps are high, temp display works well on the hand controller.
