The sat nav cooling fan replacement was performed on my 2011 Forester S-Edition MY12 (Kenwood FXDB09MF2). This unit is also used in other Subaru models, so this guide might be suitable to use.

The Noisy/buzzing sound, coming from the sat nav, is related to the faulty/old cooling fan at the back of the unit.

The new cooling fan was purchased from Adelong Electronics for $10.30

The stock cooling fan amp rating is 0.11A and the new one is 0.08A, so I'm not sure if this fan will do the job?

Tools needed
- Soldering iron
- Wire cutter
- Small and regular size phillips head screwdriver
- Small flat head screwdriver
- Wire stripper
- Electrical tape

Removing Sat Nav Unit

Step 1

Eject the disc from the sat nav unit, either a cd or a map, it doesn't matter.

Step 2

Image

With your fingers, put them under the top section of the dash fascia and start pulling the marked arrows, until it starts to pop out.

Step 3

Image

With your fingers, start pulling and make your way down and pull out the whole dash fascia.

Step 4

Insert back the cd or dvd disc, so the screen is back to it's normal position and turn the ignition off.

Step 5

Image

With a regular phillips head screwdriver, remove the four marked screws.

Step 6

Pull the sat nav unit out and start unplugging the wire connectors behind.

Installing New Cooling Fan

Step 1

Image

Get a small phillips head screwdriver and loosen the two marked screws, which are holding the cooling fan at the back of the sat nav unit.

Step 2

Image

Gently pull the fan out to disconnect the wire from it's connector.

Image

Step 3

Image

The new wire connector is bigger and different to the stock one, so we will need to cut them with a wire cutter and swap them around.

Note: Make sure not to cut the wires too short, or you won't be able to connect it back the sat nav unit. Keep it the same length as the stock one, or just a tad longer.

Step 4

- Thread the two wires (from the fan) through the nearest mounting screw hole as a new wire path.

Note: This step is important! Wire can be pinched and fan will not sit flush if this step is not followed, once mounted back on the sat nav unit.

- Strip the cut wires with a wire stripper and with a soldering iron, solder the fan wires together with the stock connector/socket wires.

- Tape the wires up with an electrical tape.

Image

Sorry for the dodgy hack job on the side of the mounting screw hole. I didn't come across the issue mentioned in the above note until I installed the fan back on the sat nav unit. I was too lazy to remove the tape and unsolder the wires to rethread the wire through mounting screw hole, hence the dodgy job...please do not do this...lol

Step 5

Plug the wire back to it's connector on the sat nav unit. You might need to use a small flat head screwdriver to help push the wire back to it's connector/socket.

Step 6

Image

Screw the fan back on the sat nav unit.

Step 7

Reconnect sat nav back in the car and test if the fan is working before reinstalling everything.

Step 8

Enjoy the sound of quietness lol...hopefully! :D

Haha, I just removed mine completely. With the intention of buying and installing a new fan, however I lost the fan and screws somewhere, so I have left it without the fan for over a year now. Still going strong even in this 40+ heat! But thanks for this write up, now I know what voltage and size the fan needs to be so I can go grab one to put back in!!

You know there's pretty heavy fines if you get caught doing that, so I hope you had your windows up and a towel over your lap to hide it!!! ;)

Thank you for such a great DIY :ok:
I've had this issue since owning my 2010 XT. The Sat Nav was replaced while under warranty for this exact issue (Subaru Service Manager at Narre Warren told me to just turn up the volume). Two months after falling out of warranty the noise came back and since then I just slowly grind my teeth while driving.

Adelong no longer have stock, but you can buy them from RS components (fair bit more expensive).

I just finished installing the new fan and it was a breeze thanks to Freshjive's step by step DIY..
The only tricky part was trying to disconnect and reconnect some of the Connectors in the back of the Sat Nav, as you cant pull it out very far.
Make sure you tin the wires for a quick and easy Solder Joint and being such small wires, get yourself a "Third Hand Soldering Stand" to make it easy.
The Fan from 'RS Components' is not 100% silent, but far better than the original noisy fan. It also has the Chamfer on the corner for the wires to pass through
and matches the original cut out of the sheet-metal in the back of the unit :drinks:
