I did this and worked a treat.
Easy DIY bluetooth.

Grabbed a half decent mic from Jaycar, some cable and about 30 minutes later was rocking bluetooth.
Works flawlessly and great quality

I was about to do this mod, then realised I already had the factory bluetooth mic already fitted haha.

Previous owner's phone was still stored in the head unit too haha

I found the OEM Subaru mic at Subaru Genuine Parts for $99 and had it shipped for basically nothing together with a bunch of other stuff. If it was any more expensive then I wouldn't have bothered, but I'm lazy and liked the ease of plug and play.

Good news is that whilst the instructions say to mount it on the steering wheel, there's just enough cable to comfortably run it up to the top of the A-pillar where I wanted to mount it.

digging up an old thread here but have read a few different topics and answers but the missus wants bluetooth to answer calls and play music through the stereo (my08 XT luxury). do we need to hook up a mic for the phone function to work and is as simple as that or need a software or something? also read that some people have bought and installed aftermarket airplay and things from jay car. we don't want any of that **** but want the result of music from phone to the stereo with no cables.

long story short can we do it wireless or need a mic and other things for it to work?

i dont kmow about the airplay stuff. been a few years since i had the xt and havent followed it recently.

but, for me it was as simple as buying a standard mic, stripping the cable and wiring it in as shown above.
no software upgrade needed.
when the mic is detected the options get enabled automatically.

mind you, this is on the navi models, i dont know how the others would work.

The bluetooth in the SH9 Navi head units isn't advanced enough to allow you to play music over bluetooth, you'll need a cable to connect the phone to the RCA ports under the armrest.

Then you'll need a microphone (either Subaru plug'n'play or adapt a generic one) to make phone calls over bluetooth as you can't use the cable to make phone calls.

Just bumping an old thread guys.. Would anyone have the images from the original post as I might be able to make more sense of this DIY with the pics? I wanted to see what connectors I need to buy and where I'd plug the 3 wires into.

Thanks!

Seeing as the pics are long gone this is the best I could come up with.
You can see the 5 pin connector just follow the pin out on opening post.
The hardest thing is actually getting the head unit out .You have to reach in behind and cut the electrical tape holding the loom so you can pull it out.
I suggest doing the navi defeat lockout ground wire at the same time.
The connectors you can find out of any old computer they just need to slip over the male pins in the socket. Cut off at a length you can join the mic cables too, either solder or scotch lock together.
