I am looking to replace the kenwood NAV head unit in my 2009 forester XT premium with something more modern. After looking at all the installs here I really dont want the hassle of dremelling out the factory fascia for a bigger unit (Beside it looking cr@p) and dislike the aftermarket look of the aerpro double din spacer facia adapter or fascia wings
I have found a number of brand name, android and win CE toyota specific after market head units which match the dimensions of the fascia gap at 200mmx100mm
Has anyone installed one of these before? Looking at most of them they have toyota specific wiring harnesses rather than standard din harness, which makes plug and play difficult
One other advantage is a true 7inch screen rather than losing screen real estate to a fascia adapter
here are some I have found:

THis looks promising but cant find much info on the harness:

I looked into the jvc unit it is a direct fit for size but the harness it comes with is Toyota specific, you can purchase a generic ISO harness for jvc from auto barn so in theory would be plug and play.
Also any generic Toyota fit head unit that you can substitute harness for should fit so there are certainly options

Looking for inspiration - what head unit has anyone installed that is a direct replacement? Or requires minimal effort to install?

Here are my adventures with an Android unit into the SH here:

Apart from Auto Pumpkin, there are also some similar ones from Joying (www.carjoying.com).

Thanks - I am not as adventurous as you :). Hoping for a simpler install. Good DIY details for the more adventurous.

At minimum you will need a transplant harness to install any headunit which isn't Subaru OEM. What accessories the harness will convert depends on the harness - I have not seen anything which is 100% plug and pray. The OEM reverse camera and OEM BT mic are the main culprits - proprietary wiring scheme.

Is the reverse camera and mic working with your setup?

Yeah, they were the custom mods I had to make. Splice the camera wires and run a new mic through the A pillar up to the sunglass holder.

I put an eclipse avn827ga in there.
http://www.eclipse-web.com/au/products/ ... avn/827ga/

I had a noisy fan on the oem unit. Its ok. Painful at times. Had the android units been more advanced would have done one of those. Or raspbian based unit.
