I have the stock SH9 touch screen head unit.

The GPS has given up the ghost. If I look through the settings in the HU I can see that the HU is not able to find any satellites.

There are no missing plugs or loose wires on the HU, but I am wondering where is the GPS module.
Is it inside the HU or is there an external aerial that may be broken?

Id prefer to try and fix it rather than go down the expense of a aftermarket HU

This link should be useful and lots of other useful information across the ae64.com site too:
http://ae64.com/Navi-transplant-install.htm

He links to a page with an image from a US Impreza but the link below is for SH Foresters:
http://opposedforces.com/parts/forester/us_s12/type_8/electronic/audio_parts_radio/

It shows the GPS antenna mounted inside the plastic dash cowl above the dash gauges.

When I installed my Android HU GPS I used the GPS antenna that came with it (due to the different plug design) and mounted it with double-sided tape on top of one of the aircon ducts.

If you do end up needing to replace the antenna that's an easy spot to mount one, it's accessible while you have the HU out.

The antenna to suit the Subaru HU is described as 'Eclipse Navigation GPS Antenna', there are a few up on ebayAU right now.

Turns out that I was able to fix the problem...... by plugging in the existing gps module... oh brother.

I figured this out by going into the HU diagnostics.

This is achieved by turning the car to accessories, so the HU starts up, then you turn the audio off.
the next step is to press on the left hand side of the screen, then the right, left, right, left, right

this brings up the dealer diagnostic menu, where you can see

vehicle signal info
connection info
rear camera check
dealer setup

clicking on vehicle signal info, cave me a message that the antenna was not connected.
I took the head unit out. rummaged around in the space behind the dash, and guess what, the plug for the gps was found, reconnected and it all works.

<facepalm>
