Hey guys,

As you may have guessed, I have the dreaded FXDB09MF2 unit. It is cumbersome and lacking features, I even hate the GPS functionality ("turn left soon" - WTF, how about reading me the number of meters to the corner?).

Are there any options for a drop-in replacement that will use the same existing wiring harness (this narrows it down to Kenwood units obviously). The features I am wanting are:
- bluetooth delivered through all speakers, not just the pissant speaker on the roof
- bluetooth audio streaming (it only does phone)
- support for the existing RCA (red/white/yellow) connection in the centre console)
- better GPS functionality (I previously had a garmin and it was great)
- support for all the existing functions like light dimming, controls on steering wheel, any antenna functions etc
- no safety lock-out when moving (I assume this is just a connected wire)

If anyone else has replaced it I would love to hear about it!

Cheers
Clay

I've just bought one of these
http://www.autopumpkin.com/car-dvd-play ... e-mic.html

SO far so good it does all you mention.

HOWEVER
it's not 100% plug n play

i.e you will need to make your own connections and adaptor loom for the factory Subwoofer and Centre console AUX input
Although it comes with it's own number of 3.5mm, USB and MicroSD inputs.
I've never used the factory AUX-In and it's usually buried under a heap of stuff

SWC is an easy connection into the factory loom,
you simply earth one of the factory wires to the SWC and connect the other to the head units SWC wire
program your buttons and it's done

I didn't like the factory "Launcher" or media player, so I use Nova Launcher and a bunch of different apps
Doubletwist is my music player and it allows full syncing with your iTunes over wifi to your head unit when it's in the driveway
https://www.doubletwist.com/

I've got a few bugs to work out
-such as auto pause of Doubletwist on "sleep", but nothing an app killer won;t fix.
-the built in radio app needs to be "Exited" to shut it up before you go into your media player otherwise they run over the top of each other

It has iGo GPS mapping built in and so far seems fine, but I'm fully integrated with android and google so I just use google maps anyway.

simple menu setting for "watch video while driving"

works great with reverse camera, wasn;t factory fitted on my car so I bought the factory camera

All the AERpro ISO harnesses, Camera, antenna adaptor are available from Wes Components at half the price of Supercheap Auto.
https://www.wes.com.au/login.aspx

http://aerpro.com/vehicles/subaru/subar ... 08_2012_sh

Bluetooth phone needs a little thinking about on my end,
I don;t think the supplied external mic is very good, But it also has one built in so will test that and see

you can buy the Genuine Subaru "Double Din" fascia but it needs trimming for this unit
I believe the SUbaru part is NOT a standard double DIN width.

but it's a modern capacitive touch screen, although relatively low in resolution (600x800) and for some reason I can;t change the text size,
i'm used to having a 7" HD tablet installed
it's got snappy performance and haven;t had any system crashes yet.

Also, Custom Car Icons
there's 191 inbuilt and you can upload your own icons (if anyone has a 3d icon file for a SH9 Forester let me know)
So the 2011 Nurburgring 24H STi will have to do.

you can see where i've had to dremmel the fascia which needs tidying up by sanding finer and finer, then polishing,
I also need to pull it forwards on it's brackets

But it's getting there

Pretty much any aftermarket double din with android auto (if you have a modern android phone), lets you use google maps.

the install will not be straight forward however, gonna need some looms made up for the under seat subs, and just run RCAs from the back to the centre console replacing the original wiring, may as well run the USB there too.

The subaru double din fascia fits pretty much any fold down 7" perfectly, as those units are a tad narrower than double din to allow for motor function so fit the subaru piece perfect.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys - I will look into that.

Also I emailed Kenwood regarding a straight swap but none exists, see below:

Good Morning Clay,

Unfortunately there are no existing Kenwood units using the same wiring.
While it is a Kenwood unit that you have, we built it to Subaru's specifications so it's unique compared to the rest of our range.

On the plus side, the unit you have is standard double din size so any of our current double din's will fit. It'll just need to be rewired.

For suggestions of models I would recommend you contact either a car audio dealer or our sales department: sales@jvckenwood.com.au

This unit looks pretty sweet, and has the Garmin Nav that I like: Kenwood DNX4150DAB

Still searching for a good price...

Have you considered any of the new 'carplay' units? Can't think of brands at the moment but most big brands have started on them. They are fairly pricey at the moment but if you have an iPhone they are awesome. I have plans for one in the future once the prices have dropped

Thanks, I'll check it out. Read some bad reviews about recent Alpine units - I know back in the day (10 years ago) Alpine used to be the bomb, but some people saying the interface is quite slow these days? Maybe just certain models with an underpowered CPU...
