Huh...is it possible that the struts from the rear hatch could be used to lift the hood aswell? I can't find any load or force rating for the gas struts.

The rear door is much heavier than the bonnet. You'd have to fab brackets, but otherwise yes.

Just get some off of ebay. Ive been running ebay hood struts since 2012. Still holds the bonnet up. And my car spends lots of time with the bonnet up too.

For SF owners, if you permanently attach bonnet struts you'll no longer be able to move the bonnet stay to the vastly superior rear position (base of stay next to driver's strut top. With it in that position you can strip engine bay bare without interference
