So here's the thing. I have a Subaru STI Quick Rack 34110FG010 2.4 lock to lock in my SH Forester and it's great, except for on full lock.

Reversing out of the garage or a very tight slow turn of full lock creates a judder in the steering, almost as if the tyres are dragging sideways or the PS belt is slipping - bump, bump, bump.

Belt tension seems fine and there is newish PS fluid. O ring has been changed. VDC currently disabled awaiting a scaling up solution for the CANbus

Any ideas?

For how long are you holding on full lock?

If more than a second or two it might be the power steering system protesting.

Yeah - its on full lock as in when reversing out of the garage, as soon as I let the steering wheel relax a little it stops. But why would it protest on the STI rack and not on the stock I wonder?

Owners' manuals will often say not to hold full lock for more than a second or so.

Perhaps "extended full lock" plus the higher gearing of an STI rack makes the power steering pump protest faster than a lower-geared Forester rack?

(just throwing ideas around)

Maybe - it's all a bit out of my understanding this one. Looking for the wisdom of the crowd. It's more prevalent when the car is cold, so I kind of assumed that must be a hydraulic rather than mechanical issue.

Cold mornings, my SH will protest a bit on full lock. My wife likes to hit the limit of the rack despite my constant "nagging" about doing so. The pump will whine and the belt can squeak but I don't get any shuddering of any sort. Do you have any air in the system? My 06 STi had a slight shudder in the rack even with a small amount of air in the system.
