Hi guys,

Quick general quesiton, I am looking at a used XT in a dealer, one of the rear tyres had a cut in it, that I was not happy with.

They were willing to replace 1 tyre, which seemed odd to me, but they reconsidered and offered to replace the two rear tyres

Is someone able to tell me if replacing 2 tyres on a AWD car is a bad idea. Currently I would say the geolanders on it, have 18 months to 2 years of rubber on them.

any advice?

Two is fine, it is a lot more preferable than one! As long as they are on the same axle, as you mentioned.

Having said that, if they are offering to replace two, I'd haggle the cost down and sort your own tyres out; as you can bet the dealer will find the cheapest tyres available. And also because Geolanders are 5H-1T.

As a rough price guide you could get Kumho KU31s for around the 600-700 mark depending on size. And that would be a very popular choice of performance tyre on here.

Thats some great feedback.
I had considered negotiating a lower price and getting a set of 18s.

Ill look into the kumho, that is not as much as I thought new rubber would be

The deal breaker is the amount of wear on the fronts.

If they are below 50% I would do all 4

Even @ 50 to 60% is border line as you put stress on the diff.
( center diff I think )

Other have different idea's but just my opinion

Jasper has a good point about getting the price knocked off for tyres and getting some Kuhmo's

Just checked online - for 235/45/18 tyres (perfect for 18x7.5 or 18x8 rims) at St George:

KU31 - $149 each
KU39 - $169 each.

Also both Tempe Tyres and St George are having Australia Day sales tomorrow, so go haggle hard at the dealer....

You may find it hard to negotiate a lower price based on the tyre/s, as they could say you're either happy to drive away with it the way it is, or you want them to replace the rubber. :dontknow:

Spot on! Subaru recommends a maximum of 4% difference in diameter from front to back. Any more than this wears out the centre diff. I've noticed on OzFoz there's been a few members with centre diff probs in just the short time I've been active. IMO this message needs to be spread a bit more...other sites recommend replacing all 4 tyres at the same time. I know its expensive, but not as much as a centre diff!

Is there a service to even out tyres, to save damaging diffs? I know which I'd prefer.

Or you could just rotate your tyres - because we are all so hot on maintenance, us OzFozzers...

This is me being sarcastic as I'm probably the least likely to do this
