I've got stock wheels and 225/55/18 tyres and am a spirited driver, what pressure is best for traction and cornering?

Mcstevo is right.

I took my SH to Fulcrum for a wheel alignment and he was specific about running higher pressures ie 40 psi

Fulcrum did not care to define that advice of run 40 psi.... profile not an issue?

Cheers Al

Try 40.
Try 35.
Try in between.
Decide what you like best.

Ideal tyre pressure depends greatly on a number of factors. Tyre compound, tyre class, tyre size, vehicle wieght, road surface, and about a thousand others.

For example, the ideal tyre pressure for my combo is somewhere around the mid-high 20s cold. But thats on special competition tyres with very large size, very small sidewall, and also very stiff side wall.

The typical tyre you are gonna find in forester conpatible sizing is generally not gonna be a size that conducive to good sports/road handling in the first place. Because the forester is an SUV and has SUV sized tyres with very tall side walls. But you may find increasing the pressure up to around 35 or so or even a smidge higher might feel good when you really lean on them. They might not handle quite so good at higher pressures, but they might feel better as the tyre wont be de-forming excessively under lateral loads. And the better feeling may allow you to handle the car better that way.

No one is gonna be able to give you a magical number that is perfect for your car and tyres. Just have a play and figure out what feels best.
