Hey all driving home last night my car decided it wanted to start telling some mint as knock knock jokes.
The knocking sounds very much like the big end bearing has failed.
Just wondering what my options are and if anyone would have an idea on rough prices.

Cheers!

broadly, in ascending order of cost the options seem to be:

- drop-in wrecker engine
- Subaru-built stock bottom end (eg from Car Mods Australia) plus reconditioning & reinstalling your current heads
- forged parts bottom end (eg from Rising Sun Subaru) plus reconditioning & reinstalling your current heads

I'm keen to see other people's comments on total cost of these options, since it's an issue that could affect any of us.

Going to sound really silly here. What are the differences between the short block from an ej255 to the ej257 like the one that is listed on car mods Australia

EJ255 - WRX & Foz
EJ257 - STI

I am not sure of whether they are plug and play, so best check. I would expect different wiring on the STIs... But not entirely sure.

Mate, been there and went through a lengthy process to decide what was best for me.

In saying that, I admit I didnt consider middle option Yowie put forward to have stock rebuild.

After making the decision to keep my Foz, I ended up going forged components route. Reasoning behind it was that it will be my car for sometime, and if i bought a second hand engine complete from wrecker, would I be buying the same issue?

In terms of $$'s, engine from wrecker was going to cost anywhere between $4.5-6k, and to have it rebuilt was from $6.5-10k

I decided to have work done by MSR in Gosford, drive in, drive out was approximately $6.2k (slightly under what was quoted), but then I had some other bits of work done at same time.

Figures above are from memory, engine was rebuilt 2 years ago, still have all my notes somewhere if you want more details

I am more leaning towards taking it down to gotitrex to have the rebuild done.
As it stands I've only had the car for 3 months and it's only done 187k so didn't expect an expense like this.
I also have been to my local dealership for them to quote me on a low km engine.
Prices on complete second hand motors from wreckers seem to be now around the 3-4k mark so have dropped a little it.
I would love to go the forged route but just don't know if I could make the budget stretch that far.

I certainly didn't expect it as well. I had mine for about a year when it was found, and had 137k on it.

A lot to be said for good service history.

As I said, happy to provide my research if it will help you at all. I called around a lot to see what my options were, I live in ACT so my focus was Canberra and Sydney regions.

Just remembered I had provided a summary to another member who thought they had same issue. Below is summary of my research, can't remember what first two options were, think they were just differnet places. These estimates are 2 years old.

Canberra option 1
- engine ranging from $3250 to $6000
- $1500 to install

Canberra Option 2
- rebuild $8000-10000
- Second hand engine (sourced and installed) - $6000-6500
- Short block built up - $8000-9000

STI Heaven
- 2014 engine (no installation) - $3750

MSR
- rebuild with forged components (drive in drive out) - $6500

All Drive Subaru
- rebuild with STI components - $7000-8000
- rebuild plus some additional mods - $11,900-13090
- (at this stage i had decided i was going to rebuild and add some extra bits)

Rising Sun Subaru
- rebuild with forged components - $7200-8000
- plus install - $1200
