Hey,

I have a quick noob question...

Can the water pump on a 2009 SH Forester XT be swapped out fairly easily? How long should it take, and does it require the Timing belt to be replaced also?

Thanks,

It is driven by the timing belt. So rhat needs to come off to get.

Mate,
Water Pump replacement is a big job and is usually undertaken when the Timing Belt bearings etc are scheduled.

And don't just blindly choose a standard Subaru Water Pump replacement. The best Subaru Water Pump replacement is the STi caste impella. There are plenty of threads about coolant system and Subaru Water Pump on here and other forums.

And you can check the genuine Subaru Parts prices, and then get a price on a Water Pump replacement STi caste impella for the best price from Kris and Wendy at Rising Sun Subaru 07 54570089

Cheers Al

Anyone used the Gates water pumps?
I'm due to do my timing belts, so looking to replace my water pump too.

Found this kit in Ebay https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 3168316036

I've got SH MY10

Cheers,
GD

The kit linked appears to have all the required pulleys at quick glance.

I went OEM about 10k ago.. don't forget to replace thermostat while going.
Can be done afterward but easier while you're down there and have the system drained etc.

Also going to need accessory belts as one of them is a stretch fit and the documented removal process is to cut it off...

What's the reason behind replacing the thermostat? Do they wear much?

Starting to look for parts for the belt service on the SF aswell, can anyone recommend good ones for a stock SF5 STi A/T?

Gates is a pressed steel impeller, it is not the best, the Subaru Water Pump replacement is the STi caste impella.

More preventative maintenance, saves having to drain the system again, one less thing to worry about down the road, etc.
At least for me it's peace of mind from general observation of sensitivity the EJ engine is to overheating causing headgasket issues.
