Depending on what you want from your car, there are a couple of Blouchs in the For Sale section. They would be a good upgrade!

Id skip a TD based turbo if you can avoid it. They make nice power, but are lazy to spool.

Don't really want to upgrade the factory fuel system, sticking with unleaded. So pretty boring!

I just want a nice everyday car with a bit of zip - nothing too laggy.

The VF52 spooled up at at a good rate.

Not much. My first hand experience was with a Blouch billet wheel TD05-18g-XT. It spooled slower than my Blouch Dom 2.5XTR. It was only 100rpm or so. But the Dom was capable of higher peak power, so by that logic, you would expect it to spool slower. But it spooled faster and made more power, and made that power at a lower boost pressure too.

There were other variables like the DOM having a 3inch inlet VS a normal size inlet on the TD05. And i believe the biggest inlet you can get on the turbo the better, unfortuantly subaru stock location limits that at 3inch. Plus the obvious BB / journal bearing cartidge differences which probably play a large role. Both turbos were billet wheel. (Both even Blouch XT billet wheel design) So its not a billet wheel difference.

My personel opinion would be to not run a stock location turbo on a built engine because of thier downsides. But i can see how thier upsides appeal to alot of people.

I do recall you mentioning that twist mount setup's after much better in terms of what it opens up with turbo selection.

At this stage I have no intention of building a forged motor or upgrading fuel system components if I can get away with it.

Stock location for this build.

I just assumed you were doing a build. You post says 'new ej257 bottom end"

So your getting a new bottom ej25 end, and NOT even putting pistons int it? Dafuq? Pistons is like the 1st thing (of many) that fuqs up on these engines.

Long story short - the engine is already in the car - found this just before when taking off my dump pipe in attempts to diagnose some smoke coming out of the exhaust.

So I am assuming my turbo is in need of replacement

You can't tell just from a photo from the back, every used turbo looks like that from the back. You'll have more luck taking it off and looking at the front. How does it spin?
