Hi all,

My 2010 Foz XS (90,000km) was bought from dealer 1.5 months ago (3 months warranty).

I'm not sure what is causing this steering wheel vibration. It isn't a violent shake but there is something causing it.

Anyone had similar issues before?

Would this be something that warranty would cover from the dealer?

Thanks in advance for your help

So it is only when you're going down a hill?

Anything regarding warranty you'll have to be able to reproduce the fault "on demand". If you can do that it may be worth taking it back for them to have a look.

Is the vibration only when braking? Is it only when doing down hill? Is it worse when braking from 100kph than 60kph?
It could be your rotors are warped. They may need machining or replacement.
Worth going back to the dealer and having them check it out.

Yeah. I would suggest getting the disc rotors checked for run out. Or simply machining a fresh face if thickness allows.

And also worth getting wheel alignment checked.

Also check LCA bushes aswell

Hey mate,
You can't warp a brake rotor. What he could be feeling is a pad deposit on the rotor.
Read: http://www.stoptech.com/technical-suppo ... ther-myths

In fact every case of "warped brake disc" that I have investigated, whether on a racing car or a street car, has turned out to be friction pad material transferred unevenly to the surface of the disc. This uneven deposition results in thickness variation (TV) or run-out due to hot spotting that occurred at elevated temperatures.

Measuring the rotor as Bram has outlined will confirm this.

Thanks Craig. Yep as per your link and this article, rotors don’t usually warp. I was wrongly using ‘warped rotor’ as a more general term. Here is another good article on the topic.

Rotors dont warp. But they do scallop and wear unevenly. Resulting in the disc rotor run out being excessive. This can be physically measured with a dial indicator.

The effect is almost like corrigartions on an unsealed road. If you think about a tyre rolling over the gravel road. Then you would think it would stay more or less just as smooth as the day it was graded. But what always happens is it develops high and low spots known as corrogations. Same thing can happen with a disc rotor.

Hi guys,

I'm going to replace all rotors and brake pads to hopefully resolve the brake shudder when going downhill. (I'm going to buy Pagid front rotors, DBA rear discs and Bendix heavy duty front and rear brake pads)

I'll let you know if that sorts out the issue so people will know for future problems on their Foz!

Cheers

100% rotors are done, while your at it chuck on some soft pads. I would not use heavy duty pads cause you'll probably stuff your discs again. Heavy duty pads are more for towing, check out the EBC Greenstuff™ Brake Pads and DBA rotors are great, just don't get cross drilled as their prone to cracking.
