Hi. I have a 2011 s-edition and my economy is getting worse and worse. Currently it's at 14.5l/100km. When I first got it 6 months ago it was 13.5 l/100km. Not great but better. Same usage patterns. Mostly short stints to drop off the kids etc.

Freshly serviced 3000km ago
Tyre pressures 36psi
New fuel ratio sensor
Car has done 49000km
I believe the car has some sort of tune to increase power to 200kw but I don't know details
Has a 3in dump pipe feeding into stock exhaust.
Last service I complained about fuel econ and they reset the transmission shift pattern. No change to fuel usage

To me it seems like it's running excessively rich while warming up.

I have an obd reader but have not tried it yet. Where's the port?

Anyone have any ideas that can help me?

Cheers, Martin.

Only 49000km - nice and low so engine shouldn't be an issue.
Most tunes lower fuel consumption by a small amount assuming you don't use the power they provide :) More right foot - more fuel used :(

Port is under the steering wheel area.

Short stints don't help fuel economy as car is cold and often lots of stop and start traffic.

Has the car been serviced as per intervals eg each 6 month? It should have recently had spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter changed. These can impact fuel economy.

I've been gentle with the right pedal.

Everything is logbook serviced. Filters Eric changed.

Even after the car is warmed up it smells rich. Could it be some sort of sensor malfunctioning

Checked the codes with the obd2 scanner and can't find any issues.

Those fuel economy numbers are not great but not very bad either. I won't expect a huge change. Getting into 12s for city driving is probably good but others can also comment.
It could be a poor tune? Maybe get it checked.

I would presume being winter and that you are in sydney it could just be taking that bit longer to warm up especially noticable if you are doing lots of short trips.

Does the s edition have an instant fuel readout. Its surprising how rich they run until warm.

At 40km it would be unusual for an o2 sensor etc issue

You picked the wrong car for fuel economy - wrx engine in a heavier body

Mine gets around 350-400kms/tank city and 550-600kms/tank highway

With a $25 bluetooth obd sender, an Android phone/device (+ windscreen holder?) and the $5 Torque Pro app you can check the following things (and many more) in real time:-

- actual fuel consumption at that moment (eg in cc/min);
- longer-term fuel consumption (similar to OEM readout)
- Air-fuel ratio (to see when running 14.7:1ish or when lean/rich)

If it reveals a normal pattern of behaviour, at least it might give you instant feedback on how your driving habits affect fuel consumption.

Eg1 - taking your foot off the accelerator down hills gives you a lean AFR and very little in the way of fuel consumption. Conversely versus staying on the throttle down the same hill chews the juice for no real benefit.

Eg2 - you'll get a better sense of how hard you can accelerate in normal traffic before the AFR tips from 14.7:1 into "rich"

I get similar distance per tank in city.
