I got some short hangers off eBay, pulled them right up to the body

Were they specific for subaru or universal and you just welded them on?

I got these ones, and drilled out the holes with a 1/2" drill bit (to bring them to 12mm as per Subaru). Only need to put them on the rear-most hanger on each muffler, so you get 2 for the car and 2 spare. Tip is to use WD40 to grease the old ones up to get them off, and I use a jack to push the muffler up from the road to make it easier to get them on. Being poly, hoping they last - the previous rubber ones snapped pretty quick.

ahh i see, i used these ones

However i felt any more forcing them upwards was putting a lot of strain from the cat back, so i bailed and left as is to avoid any issues to play it safe. Guess it can take a lot more flex it you got yours to sit right with your ones. I might get a set and see how i go, and yeah i only applied them on the rear-most hanger too the front ones were fine.

Not sure if its just worth having a muffler shop shorten the hangers off the muffler itself so i can go back to the OEM rubber ones

You do have to force it up, but once you get it on it seems fine. Rubber was not enough to last with the increased pressure, however the Poly seems quite robust so will see how it goes. I noticed when drilling out the holes on the poly the material was coming off in spirals, not 'chunking' off like the rubber. That in itself is a hint it will last a while
