I installed mine about a month ago, and had a Throttlehappy tune and it's definitely a lot naughtier to drive. Really happy with the mod, best bang for my buck.

Hey mate was your tuned on the td04? If so how does it compare?

VF46 doesn't run out of puff at 5k rpm :lol: :lol:

A TD04 is well out of usable puff before 5k. It's making some form of boost sure, but it's also hotter than a hairdryer :lol:

E52(as displayed on the dash) as owner had just over half a tank of 98 in the car(drove to E85 Servo on 98 with flex tune loaded)
VF46
PW TMIC
Dump Pipe
TuSpeed 3 Port
DW300c Pump

Makes 224.7Kw on a hub dyno on E85 :)

Basically power peaks around 4800rpm and holds peak power nearly to redline :lol:

That's an impressive number considering the turbo size, what would it be making on 98?

So much power left on the table by Subaru. Makes me wonder why they don't make proper hero cars. I'm new to this so feel free to tell me I'm wrong/stupid. Seems 200 awkw is reliably achievable with 52/tbe/injectors/fuel pump and a tune. Top mount, 3 port, up pipe, silicone inlet all seems to be unnecessary unless going for more than 200.

Can someone point me to where this is wrong? Hoping to learn more :)

Mine* made 155kw on 98 octane and 11.5:1 air-fuel ratios on a stinking hot/humid early February Brisbane day.

[*SH 4-speed auto
VF46 with mild porting
Grimmspeed 3-port boost controller
Perrin turbo intake pipe
standard intercooler
X-force 3" turbo-back exhaust]

Apparently the exact shape of the pre-peak torque curve shouldn't be taken literally due to the auto gearbox.

It might be back on the same Dyno within a month, so we'll see if a cooler day has an effect.

Probably a few things, but my guesses in approx. order of priority:-

1. Manufacturers need meaningful product differentiation across the whole product range. Why pay top dollar for an STI if a soft-roader makes the same power? Easy to de-tune the soft-roader to improve the halo car comparatively. Eg the Ford XR6 Turbo is usually slightly less powerful than the "hero" v8 from Ford in any given year, despite the 6 cylinder turbo having loads of un-tapped potential.

2. Manufacturers need to build in enough reliability to keep warranty claims down. Most of us on this forum are enthusiasts who presumably know what is/isn't abusing the car. A regular buyer might try to flog the same car on a cold engine, etc, etc and then come crying to Subaru for warranty claims if it was tuned too close to the limit straight out of the box.

VF52 doesn't need injectors to run on 98ron. The TMIC, 3 port, and silicon inlet is not needed, but highly recommended as it helps with boost control and cooling. While the stock TMIC might be sufficient to make 200kw, it will start to be inefficient real quick.

Generally speaking, on a manual car we usually see power as follows:
TD04 = 160KW
VF46 = 180KW
VF52 = 200KW

Auto cars, take 10% off

Sweet. And what can I ask is next? I read lots of 46 vs 52 talk, but what's after the 52? And why don't lots of people seem to go there? Maybe another way of asking that is, what do our stock internals regularly handle when being driven by someone who's not thrashing the car 24/7?

After a VF52, you have TD05 20G, Blouch Dominators etc... Will need injector upgrade. Most don't go down that path as the stock engine is not up to the task. Will need a built block to handle the power. Big investment...
