Hi guys,

A while back my power steering pump was whining like a b*tch so I replaced the oil which helped a little bit but didn't solve it. Eventually I thought the pump was buggered and replaced it with a new one, only for the problem to quickly reappear. Turns out the rack is leaky and probably letting air into the system and causing the whine. I shut it up for about 6 months with Lucas power steering oil but that's now failing too so I'm going to have to bit the bullet and fix it properly.

Anyone replace a rack before and have any advice? So far I have found a seal kit for $80, second hand racks from local wrecker $165, and re-manufactured for various prices $400+ on ebay. Second hand is the most tempting but I would be gutted if I got a dodgy one, given I assume its not a small job and will have the additional expense of a wheel alignment also.. I'm not even going to get mechanics quotes because I can't imagine it coming in under a grand.
Cheers!
