I bought one from AliExpress but haven't had the key cut yet. I'm not 100% certain if I could simply lift the electronics over to the new one, or if I'd need to trim it.

There is only one issue, unless they have changed the design.
The immobiliser chip can fall out of its internal spot though the key flip slot.

I have a converted flip key done by previous owner of my parts wrx. Same as the one in your pic, seems fine.

I've had that flip key in our other car, still haven't got around to have it cut!

Have you had to change the batteries yet?

One of the first things I did......bought a blank off eBay and got an auto locksmith to come and cut it and clone the transponder while I was at work.

This is the one I got http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Subaru-Forester-Complete-Remote-Flip-Key-Transponder-Keyless-Entry-Fob/122512972676?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648
