I've been wanting a turbo'd daily for a while now. Preferably something stock, and auto (I know, I'm getting old!) and I happened to come across this advertised on Facebook the other week. It's a 2001 S/tb JDM Import. As the car was located in Sydney, I politely asked Sydney's local SF guru (20inch) if he could inspect the car for me to see if it was worth making the drive. After getting the seal of approval from Dane, I put a deposit on the car and organized a day to pick it up. The exterior is a little rough, and it has a few little mechanical issues to sort out but I think it should all clean up rather nicely.

Arriving to pick it up

First stop after purchase was DC_Jap_Automotive in the next suburb over to borrow their hoist for a few minuets and purchase some mods.

I bought a 22mm adjustable rear sway bar, heavy duty mounts and heavy duty endlinks front and rear.

After the 5 or so hour drive home, I took a few pictures then got stuck into quickly fixing up those foggy, yellowed headlights.

After giving the headlights a little hand polish with some mothers scratch remover.

Having a few stock parts from the Type M floating around that would make for free upgrades for this foz made them the first things done after getting the car home.

First up, stock TMIC shroud with a custom splitter so the air from the scoop gets distributed across the TMIC core more evenly.
Image

The I put the stock Type M TMIC, alloy Y pipe and TB coupler on. Whilst the TMIC's are pretty much exactly the same besides a little STi sticker, the Type M one also doesn't have the deteriorated foam insulation along the top edge. The Y pipe being alloy should flow better than the stock plastic item, and never get brittle and split and well, the STi Throttle body coupler is red and has an STi logo on it!
Image

Upon pulling the stock TMIC off I noticed a little bit of oil buildup in the core and there was some significant leakage on the back of the Y pipe. So I think the car may have a slight blow by issue or leaking turbo seals. I'll have to keep an eye on that over the next few weeks.

Looks much nicer that the stock TMIC in situ though

I put the stock Type M rays on as well. Gold on Red, how could I not?!

I'm slowly compiling a 'to do' list to service/fix/clean up the car. But as I'd like to get some slight issued looked at by my mechanic I'll leave giving it a good and proper detail until this is booked in.

I'll also be taking the wheels, front brakes, and stereo out of my blue NA before it is delivered to its new owner in two or so weeks. The brakes and stereo will be getting installed into this car. Getting the blue NA ready for delivery will be my second priority in the short term, so I wont be able to fit the whiteline bits, or any of the other bits I have sitting around for it until that's done.

The paint is in pretty bad condition. I'm hoping that a good cut and polish will get it looking somewhat respectable and shiny again. Depending on how the paint comes up, the wing and possibly front and rear bars will be getting a respray as well.

Mechanically wise, I suspect that there is an oil leak from the sump plug and transmission pan gasket. As I'll be doing a full fluid service, I'll fix these up at the same time. There is also an issue with one of the front driveshafts not going into the gearbox all the way. When I had it up on the DC Jap hoist I couldn't push it in by hand. I suspect this may just be a case of it either needs to be removed and re installed or, that a shaft that is about 25mm too short has been fitted and I need to buy and fit the right one. But I'll get my mechanic to look at this incase there is damage to the front diff.
Image

Also, the engine has a slight miss when cold I think this may be old plugs and leads, so they'll be getting replaced. With the oil I found in the stock TMIC combined with some observed blue smoke from the exhaust at start up and a few puffs when cold I think the Turbo seals may be on their way out. I'll have to look into rebuilding or replacing the stock TD04 when I install the TBE I have sitting here. The A/C also needs re-gassing.

The car drives perfectly fine and doesn't make any strange noises from either the motor or gearbox, so I'm hoping these issues should be fairly painless to get sorted.
