One OEM over-the-radiator intake snorkel...

...plus some heat-reflective tape...

...gives quite a neatly coated underside...

...which is still a "sleeper" invisible mod with the snorkel reinstalled...

Obviously the theory is that heat from the radiator and exhaust manifold might reflect off the underside of the snorkel rather than heating the plastic and therefore the air coming in. I run the Torque app showing intake air temp (measured at the air box) however reliable back-to-back testing would be too time consuming with too many variables to tell us if this reflective coating makes much of a difference. I'll keep an eye on the temps over the next few weeks though.

I don't need any testing to know for certain that the "shiny racing tape" modification adds to the Weekend Amateur Newtonmetres & Kilowatts factor (W.A.N.K factor).

Thanks for the heads-up. Checked it tonight two weren't working but the rest were ok. I've done some editing of the links and all the pics are working on my screen at the moment.

---

After a bit of driving today, after the car is parked (with hot engine) for a bit the whole snorkel (top and new metallic bottom) seems to get to engine bay temp anyway.

The possibility occurred to me that, depending on how effective an insulator the fibreglass layer is under the metal foil, I could be attaching a metal heat sink to the bottom of the snorkel to counter-productive effect.

I might need to stick a K type thermocouple into the inlet of the snorkel after parking my car and compare that to readings from my wife's stock SH9 after the same type of driving & parking time.

Maybe they can ceramic coat plastic? Lol. Try fiberglass anti-heat tape?

Ceramic coating isnt near as effective in reality as it is in internet mythology.

People have this false idea that ceramic coating is some sort of magical substance. Probably made using dried up, then ground up, unicorn excrement mixed with male unicorn semen as a bonding agent and applied by wizards over metal to perform miracles and somehow then brake the laws of thermo-dynamics.

Truth is its not quite as good as (((they))) would have you believe.

Its all about the hectic street cred.
“Oh, so your Civic doesn’t have ceramic coated tow straps? Meh, noobie”
Are you telling me Bram, that a micron thick coating wont reduce my under body temperatures to -273 Kelvin..
I had everything coated because its pretty and the sight of oxidized iron (i refuse to speak of that R word) makes me feel sad and I am usually overwhelmed with the urge to attack it with a wire brush. Its awkward when its not my car and I have to be restrained.

The trick to not having the 'r' word happen is to use a material that does not suffer from 'r' as badly as ohers.

But i think you already know that.

As for the look of ceramic. Yes it is very pretty. Until it flakes off or gets scratched

The only piece of ‘R’ in my engine bay that is visible, is the cast iron pieces on the turbo. I have never in my life fabricated anything out of plain steel to be used on my vehicles. Urgh

If Tobyo ever "comes out" to friends and family it will be to post his Rat Rod project in the Non-Forester Gallery.
