Hey all,

Has anyone suffered a leaking CVT?

I inspected an SJ XT on the weekend (2013 with 60,000k's) and noticed a damp patch under the front diff/CVT area. A bit of googling brought up a lot of posts on various forums (none on ozfoz though), which lead me to believe a leaking CVT is a somewhat common problem.

I went and looked at 2 more SJ XTs through the week, one which had no sign of a leak (2015 with 90,000k's), but the other was clearly also leaking (2013 with 80,0000k's). I could even see a bit of extra gasket goo around the mounting service where it appears someone has attempted to fix it in the past.

On American forums they are talking about TSB 16-103-16R being issued by Subaru of America for the CVT. I can't find any information about whether that applies to Australia.

Anyone here suffering the same or have any information to share? It's really putting me off buying an XT at the moment.

Also would be interested if anyone has resolved this issue under factory warranty?

Out of interest, what did you think of the 15 with 90k? Not had a chance to get to Sydney...

The 15 looked alright, no obvious issues that I could see but I was really only looking at the CVT so I didn't look very closely at anything else. I can confirm it's dry underneath though!

Not much to share but just found out that I have the exact same issue on a XT-P with less than 41,000 km on the clock, not happy with the price that Subaru is asking to resolve this issue as well =/
Still trying to confirm if I have extended warranty or not, but I'll be having a chat to them about a good will repair on a fault that shouldn't have happened with such a low km car.

I checked under the Missus' Ts (2016) and no issues but we have only done 35,000

Small update!

Subaru Dealership have come to the party and applied for a good will repair which has been approved.
Car goes in next week to rectify the leaks, now I just need to find out if they will be replacing the CVT fluid as part of the work (dropping the gearbox to get access to the seals).
If they don't Ill be asking about the cost to do this as I don't believe that these boxes are "sealed for life" and the fluid doesn't need to be replaced.

Good outcome! I've just discovered a small leak with my 2014 XTP. At 6yo and 119000km's I'd still expect no leaks. Anyhow my dealership has taken photos and also applied to HO for a goodwill repair. I'll be making sure new fluid goes in even if I have to make a $$ contribution.

As there's no new Forester XT planned I'll be holding onto to mine for a few more years. The new Outback will have a Turbo engine on offer. Might have to look at one.

Having taken Danoz's sound advice late last year re a Rumble Shack Tune, the XT has never run so well. I'll be holding onto the ole girl for some time yet :D

I've had a chat about this and am still waiting on a quotation to come through, apparently due to the cost of the fluid the damage will be a bit north of $600, still think it will be a worthy task to undertake considering that I'm going to hold onto this car for another 5 years.
