Problem I had at dealerships was something going wrong with car the next week after the service. Happened several times and since going to Indy's no problems since.
Cromwood are great and service my cars.
Lucas Automotive
URD (if they are still around)

Did until a year or so ago, thinking I was doing the right thing as I generally do my own services on previous cars.

Begin rant

The Head gasket went as they do and after taking it to get fixed by a reputable subaru mechanic (not subaru themselves) as subaru wanted a lot more it turns out they were ripping me off. Services were not done correctly as they went through the service history and receipts. Example was subaru Chargd me for a full timing kit and only fitted half of it for service but charged for full fittment.

Another thing I found was that if you take in a modded car they looked at it as an abomination. Mine has minor mods of exhaust, breaks and sway bars.
Sorry end of rant

I've had bad experience with dealership services with Mitsubishi in the past. I'm reluctant to go that route again but, like you, have been considering taking my Foz to a dealership at least once to get the codes and give a few pointers.

Might be checking out GotItRex

Can independent mechanics do the exact same thing that would get done at the dealership?

I'm assuming they can work on hew Subarus too....

Yes... there are mechanic workshops out there that can service your Subaru that won't void your warranty, just make sure to ask that question.
I do the simple things like oil and filter "simple to me" but any major work, I prefer to take to a mechanic, but one who specializes in Subaru's (not a dealership) that do the more serious modifications on my Foz in which traveling time is 1hr away, which I am happy to do so because I trust them. I also do have a local mechanic shop, who is only 20min away, who to me have a very professional attitude and excellent customer service who I would trust to do warranty services.

So I guess if you are looking closer to home and prefer not to take it to a dealership, just be sure to ask the question that servicing through them doesn't void your warranty. Also if you are anything like me, how they sound over the phone or in person or even the state of the workshop can make or break the deal to me.

Thanks MTBTRAIL

How would I know if it voids the warranty? How would they even know?!

I might give subaru a call tomorrow and ask them. I just know from previous experience, work wasn't done very well like it should've been at the Nissan dealership with my previous car.

Hoping for an honest answer from them....

Serena,
If the 'non Subaru servicing' is done by a licensed mechanic to the Subaru specific requirements the warranty should be legally validated, but check for yourself.

This Choice advice may help.

Normally it just neans they need to use subaru items (eg oil filter) or to subaru specifications (eg oil weight, 5/30).

I would never waste my time again at a dealer and mainly use a good independent place to keep the service record, so it is easier when it comes time to sell.
Number of cars of looked at were the owner says they do all servicing and you ask some simple questions which they have no idea about is scary
