Hey dimsim. Just add some APC to your bucket of water rather than using car wash. Wash the car as normal. A quick dry. This will result in removing dirt and also the APC will remove any old wax therefore leaving the car ready for claying.

yeah that would work. thanks!

@serena.....APC is all purpose cleaner and jonp has given an example of clay bar in the product list of his first post.

no one is forcing you to

It's up to you how much time, effort and money you put towards cleaning your car :D

you can just wash it and leave it at that...

APC is All Purpose Cleaner. You can get it from Bunnings etc. and made by various companies. As per the name it is a good product to clean most things :). For car cleaning you can use to remove dirt/stains from carpet etc but in the above it is used to remove old wax from the car therefore leaving the paint as clean as possible before clay/polish/wax.

Clay bar - it is like plasticine. You use it to remove contaminates (stuck on dirt/sap etc) from your paint that washing doesn’t/can’t remove. You use it by gently rubbing it over your paint (with a lubricant). It is amazing how much dirt it removes. You don’t have to do this. 99.9% of people never have and never will. The reason to do it is to make your car as clean as possible and therefore as shiny as possible but is optional.

I'm certainly willing to give it a go.

So can you wash your car with APC, dry it and that's it or is there another step that is crucial? Like wax.

Sorry if this sounds ignorant! I just want to keep it in decent condition as it's certainly not a cheap car but I'm not an expert and don't want to go over the top.

1) Wash with APC.
2) Dry.
3) Clay.
4) Polish.
5) Wash.
6) Dry.
7) Wax.

You can skip steps 3 to 6 if your paint is already in good condition or you can’t be bothered.

The above is ideally done about once a year.

Thanks.
The car is new so the paint is in good condition.

I'll do steps 1,2 & 7

There are washing products with wax in them.
Would this be ok for the average person?

If the car is brand new perhaps just wash it for the next 6 months and then wax it after that.

Wash and wax is ok for average person. I am not average so not for me :)

The simplest approach could be take it to one of those coffee/car wash places or one of these shopping centre car wash places. They can take care of it all while you relax :)
